High estrogen levels in men can cause of variety of symptoms, including a lower sex drive, bloating, weight gain, and prostate problems. Estrogen levels above normal can also cause a condition known as gynecomastia. Increased estrogen levels in men may be beneficial in some males because estrogen helps the body absorb a higher amount of calcium, and it can be an effective tool for fighting the spread of some cancers. Some men also receive estrogen during sex change transformation treatments.

Estrogen is a hormone produced by both males and females, but females naturally have a much higher level of estrogen, especially during the woman’s fertile years. Men produce estrogen in the adrenal glands and testes along with androgens. The levels of estrogen production increases as a man ages, and during that time a man’s levels of adrogens, such as testosterone, falls.

Higher than normal estrogen levels in men can counter the effects of testosterone hormones, which are responsible for the male’s sex drive, hair growth, and common male characteristics, such as an adam’s apple, deep voice, low body fat ratio, and amounts of body hair. Estrogen may cause weight gain, irritability or depression from an unstable hormone balance, or impotency in men. Higher levels of estrogen in men can also cause bloating or swollen breasts.

Men can also develop gynecomastia as a result of high estrogen levels in men. Gynecomastia is a condition where the breast tissue in men becomes enlarged or swollen, causing pain and discomfort. The condition can cause psychological effects in men who feel embarrassed and ashamed of the developing breasts. Enlargement of the breasts may go away within a few months, but sometimes a surgical procedure is necessary. Surgery will create scars, and this is another compounding issue of healing from the condition.

Estrogen can also have beneficial effects for men. Treatment options for testosterone receptive cancers, such as some types of prostate cancer, utilize estrogen hormone therapy to trick the body into thinking that estrogen is actually testosterone. This causes the body to reduce or stop the production of testosterone, which is actually causing the testosterone-receptive cancerous cells to grow and spread.

High estrogen levels in men are also beneficial during a gender reassignment because the synthetic hormones will cause female characteristics to develop in men. Along with products that reduce the male’s natural production of androgens, the increase in estrogen and progesterone will help the male during the transition. Hormone levels and hormone therapy options should be discussed with a physician.

A lot of the adverse effects of estrogen in males comes through the food-chain, animals fed food contrary to what they eat in nature, as well as certain plastics.

Estrogen in boys is akin to putting paraffin in a vehicle and wondering why the motor is not working correctly, but in humans this comes with devastating side effects.

In biology, everything has to flow in the correct balance, creating equilibrium in the body. Men are different from women and the ratios have to be within normal scientific ranges, allowing for small variations. The data is collected across different populations and evaluated over hundreds of years. An excess of one creates a deficiency in the other. You can't have an abnormal amount of one with the other in the normal range. Biology doesn't work like that.

Women who have excessive amounts of male androgens in the body may suffer from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, to give one example. It's an over-simplification putting it purely down to testosterone versus estrogen, because there are a variety of hormones involved. Girls have thousands of different genetic markers from boys.

When looking at diets in the Western world, it has to be balanced and varied or the body displays sign of ill health which create a domino effect on the organism.

Hope this contributes to the discussion.

I have Gynecomastia. I'm really tired of this situation.

@feruze-- No, elevated estrogen level doesn't mean low testosterone. But I don't think we should be thinking about it in this way.

In a healthy individual, hormones are at the right proportions. If one hormone is higher or lower than it should be, then the balance is off and it will cause problems.

This is why those with high estrogen but normal testosterone and normal estrogen but low testosterone will experience similar symptoms. It will cause fatigue, decrease in libido and depression. So the proportion of hormones is what's important.

If a male has higher than normal estrogen levels, does this also mean that they don't have enough testosterone? Or not necessarily?

Gynecomastia can happen to anyone. It's even seen with high school boys sometimes. It's unfortunate that many of us don't know that it's caused by imbalanced male hormones.

Instead of making fun of people for having "man boobs," we should encourage them to see a doctor about it so that they can receive treatment. Because enlarged breasts isn't the only side effect of high estrogen. Like the article described, there are many other negative effects on the individual.
