What are the Most Common Gastritis Symptoms?

Some of the most common gastritis symptoms include abdominal pain and bloating. When the gastrointestinal tract or stomach lining becomes overly sensitive, inflamed, and swollen, upper abdominal discomfort is one of several signs of gastritis. Nausea or vomiting may also be present with gastritis. Basically, any form of dyspepsia typically causes common symptoms of gastritis.

Although indigestion and heartburn are relatively common gastritis symptoms, the patient who has stomach inflammation and distress will most likely develop excess gas and bloating. This feeling of fullness will typically occur in the upper abdomen. Gastritis rarely causes severe pain in the lower region of the stomach, although occasionally there may be some lower intestinal discomfort as well.

Gastritis is not a disease in itself, but rather a symptom of another underlying factor or illness. A stomach virus may cause gastritis symptoms, just as consuming foods that are very rich, fatty, or greasy may cause stomach distress in some individuals. Gastritis may also be a result of over usage of certain medications by individuals who are sensitive. Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications may produce symptoms of gastritis.

Erosive gastritis symptoms include more severe pain. This pain may be in the upper or lower area of the stomach and intestinal region. Erosive gastritis is a chronic condition rather than an acute illness. When the stomach lining or intestinal walls become eroded by acid contents, infection, medications, or other factors, erosive gastritis symptoms may even include stomach bleeding.

Those suffering from any form of gastritis symptoms need to modify their diets for healing and relief of symptoms. Avoiding foods such as beans and broccoli may help prevent further gas and bloating, also known as flatulence. Avoiding fried foods or foods that are high in fat is also recommended.

Patients who have symptoms of gastritis such as sharp pain and bloating may be prescribed medications by a physician. Stomach spasms are also likely symptoms of gastritis, and antispasmodic drugs may help alleviate those symptoms. Heartburn and indigestion, which may occasionally occur with gastritis, may be relieved by antacids. Simethicone is another drug used for relieving symptoms of gas and bloating that often occur with gastritis.

A fever that develops during a bout of gastritis can be a warning sign of an underlying infection.

Another symptom of gastritis may be be fever, or an elevated temperature. If a fever develops, this could indicate the presence of an underlying infection. When fever is present, the individual should seek medical attention. In some cases, an infection may require a course of antibiotics if the physician suspects a bacterial infection.

@ddljonh-- Fatigue is listed as one of the symptoms of stomach ulcers, but it is usually accompanied by pain in the stomach, nausea, and indigestion. It may be the case that one suffers from no symptoms, or there may be severe symptoms like vomiting blood or blood found in the stool.

That's a great question about gastric and peptic ulcers. Most people think that they are the same thing, especially because gastric ulcer symptoms and peptic ulcer symptoms are pretty much the same. A gastric ulcer is found inside of the stomach whereas a peptic ulcer is found in the lining of the stomach. There is also a third kind of ulcer called duodenal ulcer and that is an ulcer in the small intestines.

I feel really tired all the time. Can that be a stomach ulcer symptom? And what is the difference between a gastric and peptic ulcer?

Many people don't realize this, but smoking and alcohol intake can also trigger acidity and stomach pain in a gastritis patient. In addition to healing illnesses which cause gastritis, taking the proper protective medications and staying away from harmful foods, you must stop smoking and drinking as well. Otherwise, gastritis can result in stomach ulcers, requiring surgery and further limitations to consumed foods. Untreated, stomach ulcers and stomach bleeding can even result in death, so this is not a health issue that can be ignored.
