What are the Symptoms of Male Yeast Infection?

Paul Woods

The symptoms of male yeast infection vary with the type of the infection suffered and its severity. The most common are redness, itching, and sensitivity of the penis. Lesions, fever, and difficulty swallowing can also be symptoms. Untreated yeast infections that grow more severe can result in leaky gut syndrome, the symptoms of which include a range of gastrointestinal maladies.

For yeast infections in the groin area, men can look for two types of symptoms, those with external characteristics and those exhibiting internal abnormalities. Externally, symptoms of male yeast infection include irritation of the head of the penis, often accompanied by severe itching. These symptoms can spread down the shaft and, sometimes, to the entire groin area. White blisters can appear on the tip of the penis as well.

One of the main internal symptoms is irritation while urinating. Involuntary vaginal secretion of a white, clotted liquid is very common for women suffering a yeast infection, but men can exhibit a similar penile secretion, although it occurs less frequently than in the equivalent condition in females. Pain and discomfort during intercourse is also among the symptoms of yeast infection in men.

Yeast infections can occur in other places on the body, including the mouth. An oral yeast infection, commonly called thrush, has as an initial symptom of small, white blisters on the inside of the cheeks and on the tongue. When scraped, they can secrete a white, clotted substance. If lesions move down the throat, they can result in secondary symptoms such as pain or difficulty swallowing, the sensation that food is trapped in the throat and, in some cases, fever.

Untreated yeast infections can severely affect the body’s gastrointestinal system, including the development of small holes in the intestine walls. Also called leaky gut syndrome, the symptoms for both men and women include severe bloating and nausea, an alternation between constipation and diarrhea, and irritability. Some people report constantly feeling tired and finding it difficult to concentrate.

Symptoms of male yeast infection can also show up in food cravings. Some sufferers report an increased desire for sweets or other carbohydrates, including foods such as pastas and chips. Bad breath can be among yeast infection symptoms for men, as can itchy, flaky skin on the feet. In some cases, problems with the prostate can be a symptom as well.

Fermented foods are very effective too in treating and managing the infection. Fermented food and alcohol deplete nutrients which allows the proliferation of the fungus.

My husband and I made the mistake of having intercourse without a condom when I had a vaginal yeast infection. I didn't know that I could pass the infection to him. A few days later, he started complaining of the same symptoms I had and I realized that he got the yeast infection. We both used my anti-fungal cream and avoided sex until the infection was completely gone. Thankfully, the treatment for yeast infections in women and men is the same.

@fBoyle-- I don't think you can tell without a physical examination and STD testing. Itching, irritation, redness and pain while urinating are all symptoms that can occur with sexually transmitted diseases. Discharge is more likely with an STD, but like the article said, even that can occur with a yeast infection.

If you have these symptoms, you need to make an appointment with your doctor. If you had STD testing very recently, I suppose you could purchase an OTC cream for yeast infections and see if it works. If it does, then you know that it was yeast. But some skin conditions like psoriasis and dermatitis can cause itching and irritation on the penis. So it's best to see a doctor.

How can I tell that I have symptoms of a male yeast infection and not a sexually transmitted disease?
