What are the Side Effects of Amlodipine Besylate?

By K. Gierok
Updated: Mar 03, 2024

Amlodipine besylate is a prescription medication that is commonly used in the treatment of high blood pressure and chest pain. While most studies have found that amlodipine besylate is highly effective, some serious side effects can exist. One of the most common side effects of amlodipine besylate use is an increase in swelling, especially in the feet and other extremities. Additional side effects include increased fatigue, dizziness, and mild to severe headaches. More serious side effects include changes in vision, fainting, and a rapid heartbeat. Those who experience these symptoms are typically encouraged to seek medical assistance as soon as possible.

One of the most common side effects of amlodipine besylate is an increase in foot and ankle swelling. Foot and ankle swelling can not only be very painful, but can also lead to the development of more serious conditions. Those who experience significant swelling after amlodipine besylate could consult with their physician as soon as possible.

Another of the common side effects of amlodipine besylate is tiredness. Typically, those who experience tiredness or fatigue after amlodipine besylate use see a decrease in severity of symptoms after a few weeks of use. When first taking the medication, it is important that patients avoid certain time-consuming tasks, as they can prove too difficult to perform.

Dizziness has also been found to be a common side effect of amlodipine besylate use. Like those who experience fatigue due to amlodipine besylate use, symptoms of dizziness typically decrease in severity after prolonged use. In addition, those who experience the most severe symptoms are usually encouraged to avoid driving or performing other similar duties during the early stages of amlodipine besylate use.

In some cases, amlodipine besylate use has been found to be linked to the development of mild to severe headaches. Patients who have been prescribed amlodipine besylate and experience mild to severe headaches typically can achieve relief through the use of over-the-counter pain medications.

Some of the most serious side effects of amlodipine besylate include changes in vision, an increased propensity to fainting, and the development of a rapid heart rate that does not dissipate during rest. In some cases, these side effects can be life-threatening. Those who experience these conditions should consult with a medical professional as soon as possible. Often, if these side effects continue for an extended period of time, patients are prescribed another, similar type of medication.

I am taking this med 10 mg daily. I am experiencing face flushes with pink cheeks. Can this be from Amlodopine besylate? I did not have this when I was taking 2.5 mg.

@anon265209-- My doctor said that vision changes are a common side effect of amlodipine.

Do you also have dizziness and headaches?

I have all three of these symptoms. I want to switch to another drug but my doctor wants me to give it another few weeks. He thinks that my body will adapt to the drug and the side effects will go away if I stick with it. The medication is reducing my blood pressure as it should, I just wish it had less side effects.

@SarahGen-- I've been taking this medication for a year and I have not had any memory problems.

Once in a while, I get some edema in my feet and legs. I also get sudden bouts of hot flashes and sweating out of nowhere. I have very little tolerance to heat and have to remain cool all the time. The hot flashes are actually becoming more frequent so I'm going to see my doctor about this side effect soon. I might switch to another medication.

You should see your doctor about your memory issues. Who knows, it might be a amlodipine besylate side effect. Everyone reacts to drugs differently, just because memory problems aren't listed as a common side effect doesn't mean that it's not possible.

Has anyone experienced memory issues after starting this medication?

I started taking amlodipine besylate several months ago. My kids keep telling me that I have become very forgetful recently. I'm only fifty-five and I never had any memory issues before this. So, I'm wondering if it's a rare amlodipine side effect.
